How to know when are persimmons ready to eat
Knowing when a persimmon is ripe and ready to pick is learned very quickly, if you have a persimmon tree. If not, and you buy yours at the farmer’s market or grocery store, you may be wondering how to tell if a persimmon is bad, or how to tell when a persimmon is ready to eat. This video will walk you through how to clean and eat a persimmon.
Many times when you buy them in the grocery store, they are not ripe. This is not a problem because they are easily ripened at home. So, how do you ripen a persimmon? I ripen my persimmons by putting them in a paper bag somewhere cool and dry until they are ready. An astringent persimmon has to be completely ripe before eating, or it has a very unpleasant taste and texture. A non-astringent persimmon is one of this things that will have to be decided by you…your choice. Some people like them riper (softer) than others. The only way you are going to have a preference is by eating them at different stages of ripeness.
People often use persimmon recipes for persimmon bread at Thanksgiving time because this is a fall fruit. You can also make cakes and other desserts, or just eat a raw persimmon like an apple. It is sweet and delicious.
Hopefully this has helped you, and you will give this fruit a try.
Enjoy!
