Styling Ice Cream

Lights- Camera- Action!

I had the best time working with a top-notch team of pros last week from Cult Marketing and Old Machine. We were producing a TV commercial for Velvet Ice Cream in Utica, Ohio. I was hired as the ice cream food stylist. Everyone had to be on their “A” game because we were shooting outside on a sunny day. Needless to say ice cream does not hold up long out of the freezer.

Food styling real ice cream can be a bit of a challenge. There is no room for error. Everything from the temperature of the ice cream and scoops to the quality of the ingredients and texture of the ice cream has to be perfect to get a “hero” that can be showcased in a photo or on HD TV.

I said real ice cream because there are many times when fake ice cream can be used. You can use fake ice cream for example in a movie or in a situation where you are not showcasing that item as something that will be sold.

I love challenges and this was definitely a big one. Getting the perfect scoops was only part of the project for me. Keeping the ice cream from melting on the set between takes was another. I taped some strainers filled with dry ice to a wooden dowel and held them close to the ice cream when the team was not shooting. It worked pretty well, but of course I had to have several “hero” scoops we could use throughout the day. I scooped so much, I tell people I got “scooper’s elbow”. LOL! You should also go check out the scooping contraption I made. Here is a link: https://twitter.com/VelvetIceCream/status/728630840859623425

If you haven’t been to Velvet, it is worth a day trip to check it out. The ice cream is great and the facility is very cool. They give free tours and have a festival coming up May 28-30 2016. Look for their commercial and let me know what you think.

Enjoy!
